Caramel – it’s not just your coat taking on the latest hue this season, nude make-up takes on a whole new look with warm earthy autumnal shades that compliment your clothes rather than contrast with them. Think honey, beige and butterscotch tones. It’s all about great looking moisturised skin layered with fabulously smooth foundation, think cashmere skin and matching cashmere sweaters. For eyes it’s about blending the mink, gold and beige colours to add more warmth to warm eyes and to contrast with cooler eyes bringing their colour out more. Finish this look with a beige to soft chocolate lip or for a less intense colour theme add a little peach.
Unfinished – the catwalks also had a slightly undone, not so perfect edge to some make-up; for eyes it was all about no mascara or for many of us in horror of missing out that make-up staple, brown mascara was the substitute to give eyes that softer finish. Eyes were then framed with a thicker brow, for those with finer brows; try adding brow shaders or matt eye shadows to thicken rather than pencils for that softer look. Lips also took on this unfinished look with lips stains, try smoothing with the fingertip rather than defining with a brush.
Seeing red – red was certainly the accent colour for Autumn/ Winter 2010 catwalks with full on red lips, from pillar box red to deep dark burgundy. It’s all about the right hue, from the cool blue red through to warm rustic red, with poppy bright and true reds in between. The ease of being able to wear a red lipstick is not only down to the undertone of the red (whether you suit a bluer, cool raspberry red or a warmer more tomato red) but also the texture. There is a vast choice out there from glossy to matt. If you like the thought of red lips but think it might be too strong a look to pull off try different textures.
If you prefer a subtle look, a gloss may be right for you, as the colour tends to be sheerer than a standard lipstick. If you are not a fan of glosses then a sheer or moisturising lipstick maybe the answer, again you get the colour pay off but the texture and density is less intense as some of your natural lip colour will show through. For those who are more dramatic in their look go for a full on red lipstick, the more matt the lipstick, the more dramatic the look.
This dramatic lip can be worn with or without lip liner, think lip stain without liner and slightly smudged in the burgundy hues to rock the Grunge fashion looks or with liner to give a more polished and sharp precision look.
Dark eyes – if the dramatic lip is not your thing, you might prefer to smoulder with dark eyes. Liner continues to be the key element with smudged Kohl pencils adding oomph to the Grunge fashion themes. Sharper and more précised lines flicked out work the 60’s to Glamour trends. Try soft pencils for the smudged look and long lasting gel eyeliners and liquid liners to define, the secret here is a fine but firm brush.
The smoky eye continues in its importance with many textures from matt to sparkle and shimmer in the usual black through to greys and charcoals.
A certain confidence is required to carry off a strong eye and lip colour together as shown on some catwalks, so wear the lighter and more nude lip colours with the strong eye colours and keep eyes nude with the red lip.
Frosty - Greys and silvers feature with shimmery iridescence, a welcome choice for those wanting something different to the camel story.
Plumberry – with all the purples to be seen in clothing the trend is reflected in make-up. There are rich purple, plum and berry shades to suit everyone. Try creating the smoky eye in purples either soft or dramatic, a fabulously complimentary colour intensifying blue, green and brown eyes. For those less dramatic add some plum as a highlight to line the eye.
The berry tones carry through into lip glosses and lipsticks for a complete look.
Cheeks – with the great outdoors fashion theme glowing cheeks could not be ignored, cheeks were flushed with peaches to rust and youthful cheek popping pinks.
