Make up for the Bride
Bridal Make up

The venue will have been booked maybe up to a couple of years ago, the flowers are ordered, you have been growing your hair for the last couple of years and the big day is getting closer and it all feels quite real now. As the invites go out its time to turn your attention to your wedding day make up, if you haven’t done so already.

Wedding day make-up really is the icing on the cake giving you that final polished look of perfection. Whether you are a low maintenance girl in the beauty stakes or a complete beauty obsessive; now is the time to invest in planning your look for the day.

With all the things to think about on the big day itself you may want to hire the steady hand of a professional Make-up Artist to create your look. If so, do plan a trial run with your Make-up Artist before hand and ask them to take a photograph for you to view the finished look. Take any magazine cut outs of looks which inspire you or any colour swatches you have as you will be able to plan with the Artist what you are looking for on your day. They will have an extensive make up kit which along with their expertise often works out cheaper than purchasing all the products yourself. Alternatively, book a make up lesson with a professional Make-up Artist with step by step guidance on achieving your perfect look; give yourself time to practice this several times before the day itself. If you are a make-up junky you may be happy to do your own make up, if so do try your looks before hand and take photos.

You may wonder where you start in planning your make up for the day especially if you are the type of girl happy with a lick of lip gloss and mascara. The starting point should be to consider the type of look you want from classic to glamorous, look at bridal magazines for ideas or talk to your Make-up Artist about what you like. The main aim should be to have make-up which lasts through the day requiring as very few touch ups as possible; you don’t want to be in the ladies when you have a party to enjoy! This does not mean that your make up needs to be heavier; it should be the right shade and type for your skin, applied in the best way to last. You really need to think along the more natural classic looks which stand the test of time as you will be captured on your wedding album for years to come.

Another consideration is the time of day you are getting married from early to late in the day, those lunch time and morning brides should be more natural in light make up as the light can be less forgiving at these times. Whereas late afternoon brides have the option for a little more richness and colour as the light is a lot softer, although the photographer will guide you through the best angles and positions to get the most out of any lighting situation for your photographs.

As always with any make up your face is the canvas and preparation is the key to a good complexion. In the run up to the day, pamper your skin as much as you can, if you can’t get the full eight hours sleep per night or some pre wedding facials try a weekly face mask for your skins needs to keep your skin in tip top condition.

Allow yourself time to find a great foundation, the key to a flawless base, take advise on the best formula for your skin type and the occasion as you will want it to last the course of the day. Try the tones on your jaw line and select the one which disappears as this one will be the one to match your skin tone. Do look at the foundation in daylight as many of your photographs could be taken outdoors. Ask the consultant for a sample to try or get them to make you up and see how it looks and feels before buying it, your wedding day is also a good day to wear a skin primer as it helps your foundation to go on more evenly and makes it last.

Then consider concealers, it is worth investing in two here, one to cover any blemishes and to be prepared should you get a spot on the day and another for under eyes which should be an illuminating concealer.

For the eye make up it is also worth applying a primer to the lid, set with powder and then apply the shades, they will last longer. Choose natural shades which compliment your eye colour. Of course darker skins and certainly Asian brides can really go to town with eye shadow colours, but if your skin is light, natural shades are better. Eyeliner tends to be a matter of choice, whether you have it at all or choose from the many types from pencil, to liquid…if you have a steady hand or cream or powder, the latter being the easiest and most natural looking. Mascara is a must and for many it may be the occasion to select waterproof.

Blusher can be cream or powder, if going for cream make sure you apply before powder. Then the lips, this is the day you want your lip stick to last; there are many long lasting lip sticks out there or tints, stains and even glosses. A word of warning though, they can be drying. Prepare your lips as much as possible by exfoliating and regularly wearing a balm. On the day its self apply balm when you moisturise, remove any excess and apply, a matching lip liner apply to the whole lip before the lip colour as this will extend its wearing time.

Finish with a dusting of powder and enjoy your day.
